Driven by lack of space, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut ordered the construction of a complementary third building on its grounds in Amsterdam, opposite the building designed by Gerrit Rietveld and next to the expansion by Benthem Crouwel. The resulting campus provides this leading art school with a new setting.
With regard to the selection of the architect, the art academy decided to launch an in-house competition. Studio Paulien Bremmer won forming Fedlev, a multidisciplinairy designteam rooted within the academy, extended with designers related to the studio.
Concept of the design is to foresee in a more interdisciplinary environment of collaboration and exchange. In addition, the idea was to create an "open" and interactive building as a space for conquest and diverse use.
In terms of sustainability the building makes use of minimal installations but is instead low tech developed as a healthy, largely naturally ventilated working environment with outside working area's. In this way the school is developed as an open air school. The generous building is besides sustainably adaptive to different kinds of use.
Due to a limited rearrangement of the existing buildings, a collective ground level has been created in and in-between the buildings. The low-rise new building offers space for shared functions such as a wood workshop, library and a performative space. On the first floor houses largely the Sandberg Instituut.
The building is characterized by landscaped spatiality. Alternating floors connected by stairs gradually merging into each other. The interior consist largely of glass. Perspectives follow each other. Corridors and stairwells have been avoided, so that "the making" by passing through, is continuously visible and interdisciplinary exchanged.
To stimulate interdisciplinary activity, project spaces on different floors throughout the buildings are added to the programm. The spaces offer students the opportunity to work and experiment freely, separate from the departmental structure. Varying, often industrially executed floors and walls define successive places. The diversity of spaces is increased by the introduction of the ‘white spaces’ in the design: parts of the interior designed and executed by designers from within in the artschool.
The outdoor space is part of the educational landscape. The roof, equipped with anchor points and electricity, offers space for exhibitions, performances or the making of temporary constructions. The overhangs and the woven-steel façade limit heating by incident sunlight. Beneath the overhangs are transitional spaces are created for appropriation and for working. The glass facade on the ground floor can be folded open and the work tables rolled out.
With the preliminary design set, a partnership with Hootsmans architects was entered, completing the building in 2019 jointly together.
